Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running.
Meeting twice a week in small teams, trained volunteer coaches lead participants through our research-based curriculum which includes dynamic discussions, activities and running games. Over the course of the program, participants develop essential social, emotional and physical skills to help them successfully navigate their world. At the season’s conclusion the kids positively impact their communities by completing a service project and are physically prepared to participate in a celebratory 5K (3.1 mile) event. These celebratory events them a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals.
Girls on the Run hosts 2 seasons each year. Our fall season is 8 weeks long (mid-Sept to early Nov) and our spring season is 10 weeks long (mid-March to early June). During the season teams meet afterschool, twice a week, for 90 minutes. Teams are led by a group of volunteer coaches. We provide coaches with detailed curriculum and all supplies needed to confidently deliver each lesson. We train coaches to build relationships, create a positive inclusive environment and to focus on girls’ individualized growth and effort. We welcome coaches from all backgrounds and gender identities, regardless of prior coaching or running experience. New coaches complete an application, background check and coach training prior to the start of the season.
