Gender Reveal Party Ideas

Finding out the gender of your unborn baby can be one of the most anticipated and exciting events of your pregnancy (besides actually giving birth to and meeting your baby, of course!) A lot of people are able to wait until they are born to reveal their baby’s gender… but if you are anything like me – you don’t want to wait BUT still want to make the reveal memorable and exciting! That’s why with both of my pregnancies I have decided to share the surprise with our friends and family with how we reveal our babies genders. Here are a couple things that we have done and some other ideas that I have come across!

Gender Reveal Cake

A gender reveal cake appears neutral on the outside, but when cut into you will either see pink or blue (icing or cake) to reveal your baby’s gender. We used this idea when we were pregnant with our daughter. I arranged to have the cake baked ahead of time with a local bakery and the day of the ultrasound we had the ultrasound tech call the bakery to say ‘BOY’ or ‘GIRL’ without telling us which one it was! That evening we had our friends and family over for a party at our home and after much anticipation and excitement we cut into the cake to reveal that we were going to have a baby girl! It was so much fun to share the surprise with our friends and family (and who doesn’t love an extra excuse to eat some cake and celebrate!)

Balloons in a Box

I have been to a couple of parties where friends have had a giant box full of either pink or blue balloons and when it is time to reveal, the couple opens the box and out fly the balloons! So much fun to see the reactions of the parents-to-be!

Confetti Filled Balloons

For our current pregnancy we decided to do something a little different. After my ultrasound I had the genders of our twins sealed in an envelope (so that I couldn’t sneak a peek!) and I took it to Party City. I picked out a packet of blue confetti and pink confetti and 2 black balloons (they need to be opaque or black to ensure you cannot see through) and I went to the register and paid. I explained to them that I was going to give them an envelope with the genders and I wanted her to fill each balloon with confetti corresponding with the baby’s gender and that I did NOT want to see what color(s) she used. (She put the leftover confetti and envelope in a bag for me so I wouldn’t know what was or wasn’t used!) When I got home, my husband and I popped the balloons one at a time…  and revealed then genders of our babies! (The picture below is not from our reveal!)

He or She: Hershey Bar

Guests will pick either a HE or a SHE Hershey bar to guess the gender! At the end of the evening the parents to be will do the big reveal!

Unwrap the bow or bowtie

I love this idea! After your ultrasound, you will go to a local boutique and purchase a BOW and  BOW-TIE. Then give both those items along with the envelope (that has the gender inside!) to a friend or store clerk and ask them to wrap the item that corresponds with the gender of your baby. Keep the other item out of sight or in a sealed bag and then at the party you will unwrap the present and find out if you are having a BOW or BEAU!

Smash a Piñata

Have a pinata filled with either pink or blue confetti and/or grass. At the party the guests will take turns swinging at the pinata until it breaks open revealing BOY or GIRL!

Silly String

For this idea, you will wrap cans of blue or pink silly string in white paper and decorate with pink and blue ribbon. When it comes time to reveal the gender, each guest sprays the silly string and will either be covered in PINK or BLUE!

These are just some of the ideas I’ve had or come across – did you have a reveal party? Please share and let me know what ideas you have done! Some people will say that finding out the gender prior to the birth ‘ruins’ the surprise – but I disagree and think these are fun ways to keep it all fun and exciting!

  1. I didn’t have a gender reveal, we wanted to be surprised! It was so funny how when I was in labor all the nurses were so excited to see what we would have since pretty much everyone finds out the gender these days. My sister and her bf are expecting twins! And for their gender reveal they did the piñatas except they had his 2 sons break them. Everyone at the party had name tags guessing if it was boys or girls. I cheated. I made her tell me before hand 🙂
