Looking for a nature-filled getaway the whole family will love? Governor Dodge State Park in southwest Wisconsin is the perfect place to explore, play, and connect with the great outdoors. With over 5,000 acres of forests, prairies, lakes, and scenic bluffs, there’s something for everyone — whether you’re hiking, camping, swimming, or just enjoying a picnic together.

???? Take a Family Hike

Governor Dodge has nearly 40 miles of hiking trails — from short, kid-friendly walks to longer scenic adventures.

Some favorites for families:

  • Stephen’s Falls Trail (0.5 mile): A short walk that leads to a beautiful waterfall! There’s a paved overlook, and the trail to the base has some rocky steps — but it’s totally worth it!

  • Cave Trail (~1 mile): A fun path with cool rock formations and lake views.

  • Lost Canyon Trail (3 miles): If your kids love nature, this wooded trail with a canyon is a great adventure.

  • Pine Cliff Trail (2.5 miles): A peaceful trail with amazing views of the lake and signs to help kids learn about the area.

Don’t forget your camera — there are lots of scenic spots for family photos!

????️ Camping Adventures

Whether it’s your first time camping or you’re seasoned pros, Governor Dodge has a spot for you.

  • Family campgrounds have over 260 sites, many with electricity, showers, and playgrounds nearby.

  • Group campsites are great for bigger gatherings.

  • Backpack-in sites offer a quiet escape for adventurous families.

  • There’s even winter camping for those who like snowy adventures!

Tip: Reserve your campsite ahead of time online, especially on summer weekends!

????️ Play Outside All Day

There’s no shortage of things to do:

  • Two lakes (Cox Hollow and Twin Valley) have beaches, boat rentals, and swimming areas. No lifeguards, so keep an eye on the little ones!

  • Picnic areas have shelters, tables, grills, and accessible restrooms.

  • Rent a canoe or rowboat and enjoy a peaceful paddle — or bring your kayak and launch from one of the ramps.

  • Love horses? The park has 22 miles of horse trails and a special campground just for equestrian campers!

????‍♀️ Bike & Explore

Bring your bikes! Governor Dodge has off-road biking trails through woods, prairies, and along the lakes. The Meadow Valley and Mill Creek loops are great for family rides (ages 16+ need a trail pass). There’s also a connector to the Military Ridge State Trail for longer biking adventures!

???? Wildlife & Nature Fun

Keep your eyes peeled — you might spot deer, wild turkeys, beavers, and even pileated woodpeckers! Spring and summer bring colorful wildflowers, and fall is perfect for seeing the leaves change.

The park also offers nature programs and family-friendly activities through the Wisconsin Explorer Program. Kids can grab a free activity book at the park office and earn a cool badge!

???? Discover the Past

Governor Dodge is in the Driftless Area, which means the land here was never flattened by glaciers. You’ll see rolling hills, sandstone cliffs, and rocky canyons that are millions of years old — a natural playground full of history and beauty.

Plan Your Visit

  • Open every day: 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

  • You’ll need a vehicle admission sticker, available at the entrance or online.

  • Don’t bring firewood from home — it helps keep the park safe from invasive bugs.

  • Concessions & firewood are available seasonally at the Cox Hollow beach area.
