In our house it all starts with my daughters’ birthdays in September and October, followed quickly by Halloween parties, harvest parties, winter holiday parties and keeps going form there. It’s a long chain of treat filled days. First of all I love treats and sweets…I’m pretty sure each of my teeth are a sweet tooth. But when we are talking about moderation it kind of goes out the window between classes full of birthdays, star of the weeks, and parties. And it gets even more challenging when you throw food allergies and intolerances into the mix.
My daughters have an intolerance to artificial dyes and flavorings. No, it’s not life threatening, which I am grateful for, I cannot imagine how scary it would be to have a child with an allergy that could cause anaphylactic reactions. But what does happen to them when thy ingest these ingredients is they get sick, vomit, and breakout in a rash on their face. I do my best make sure they do not eat things containing these ingredients. This can be a challenge because many treats (and just everyday processed food) contains these. My daughters have known their share of being left out but they are mostly used to it. Plus as an adult with Celiac Disease I understand having food limitations and often not being able to have things at events and parties, but this is much harder for children to understand.
So today I have rounded up some healthy classroom treats that are easy to make for birthdays or holiday class parties and are allergy friendly. Please, do take the time to ask if kids in your child’s class have food allergies. When parents have done this and my daughters were included it meant the world to us.
So easy and allergy friendly since they contain only oranges (clementines) and celery which are quite low on the list of food allergies.
