When I was first approached to try out Barre3, I have to be honest- I was super nervous. I had visions of myself in a mom bun, attempting messy pliés, while an instructor (a mix of a ballet madame and boot camp instructor) watched on. I was nervous. And full disclosure, I had had a baby 6 months prior and wasn’t quite sure if my body was up for the challenge. However, I had been meaning to get back into the swing of working out and figured this would be an adventure.
The first day I walked into the beautiful studio, I was immediately greeted by a welcoming and smiley staff. They showed me around the space, gave me a brief introduction to the class, and made sure they were aware of any concerns or injuries I had.
When class began, I nervously took my spot on the floor as the instructor (in Britney mic!) began our workout, but soon was put at ease when I realized that she would be guiding us through all the moves and wouldn’t leave me moving awkwardly to the side like Left Shark. Guys, you know when you have a really intense workout, and you have all the shakes because you have maxed our your muscles? That was me! But I tried to play it cool, waddling walking out of there the first day. Barre3 is an amazing workout – a combination of barre, pilates, and yoga- that stimulates and strengthens you through a series of large and small movements. The instructors keep your mind and body engaged, and are very supportive of their class attendees. They encourage you to tune in to your body and want each individual to find what works for them. And this is all done to awesome music that makes you want to move. That first day, I kept catching myself smiling in the mirror, enjoying the challenge of the exercise. Since that day, I have felt myself get so much stronger and almost immediately saw a change in my body.
One of the best parts of Barre3 isn’t even the workout, but giving myself “me” time. I have two little ones at home (a 2 year old and a babe), and outside of doing work at coffee shops and an occasional dinner with friends, I wasn’t getting any time just for me. Barre3 became my me time. My time to focus on just myself, be in the moment, challenge my body. My husband even commented on how I seemed happier after having started the classes.
Recently, I had the chance to have coffee with the owner of Barre3 Madison, Missy. She too, is a mom (of 3), and a great advocate of “me time” and connection. She believes in creating a space for moms to come, my mindful, and is excited to creating community. Something that is so important for mamas!
I feel like I’m a part of that community now. (Spoiler Alert: I bought a membership!) The instructors know every guest by name, always check in about how we feel, and bring new, exciting workouts to the table.
Now- exciting news. Barre3 is offering Madison Moms Blog readers 20% off a 10 pack of classes now through March 22nd! If you are looking for a change in a workout, to get back into working out, or just want some “me time”, I highly recommend you give it a try!
