Your Child’s First Dental Visit: What to Know

Ask a Madison Smile Solutions Dental Hygienist what she likes about her day and you will probably hear a story about a child. Let’s be honest, working with children isn’t always the easiest for some practitioners. It takes a special person to make sure that things go well.

Kids like to ask a lot of questions. Recently Theresa, one of our top Smiles Solutions hygienists, had a little boy ask her what the lead shield was for. They were getting ready to take some cavity checking x-rays. Before she could come up with an answer, the little boy cut her off. He said, “I know! It’s to keep people from running away!!” Like a champ, Theresa chuckled with the boy and they were able to move along with the appointment.  These stories make us have a fun day too!

We know that there are a lot of options available to your family when choosing a dentist. So at Madison Smile Solutions, we go above and beyond to make sure your child not only has a great visit, but that they are excited to come back!!

Our goal is to give them room to get comfortable with our staff and the office surroundings. Unlike some of the larger offices, we have a really nice setting that’s ‘just busy enough’. We try to stay on time as much as possible, however, if you have to wait a minute or two, there’s a really fun Shark’s mouth chair to sit on in our reception area. We even have some kids books, toys, and coloring available, too.

Our team LOVES seeing kids! Most of us are parents, some of us are even grandparents. We are readily prepared for the child who looks at our Panorex X-ray machine and asks, “Is this thing going to read my mind?!” Most of the kids like to tell us about their day, but many like that we have TVs in our rooms that they can watch PBS kids, Nick Jr or the occasional cat video.

screen-shot-2016-12-02-at-1-12-01-pmKids at Smile Solutions are encouraged to touch and explore. Things are less scary when you can touch them yourself. We encourage water spraying (occasionally even at Dr. Kaveh) and giving Mr. Thirsty (the suction) a try. We carry the Zooby (animal themed) product line as well. The kids love picking their favorite animal to wear on their bib, choose their animal themed tooth polisher that the hygienist will use. We even have animal themed toothpastes that we use (the big kids like these too!!!). We have Happy Hippo Birthday Cake, Chocolate Chow, Turtle Melon, Growlin’ Grape and many other fun flavors. We use Fluoride varnishes that are pretty tasty too. You can choose from Raspberry or Caramel. We have so many choices that we can usually please even the pickiest of palates.

After your child has had their teeth counted by both the dentist and the hygienist, they have earned a prize! They will get to choose a new toothbrush from our wooden pirate treasure box and some childrens toothpaste. However, their favorite part is our treasure box that has actual toys in it!!

Your kids will be thrilled to come to the dentist each and every time! We recommend starting at age 1 so kids get used to their visits and it’s not so intimidating when they get older. Call today 608-227-7000.
