Melius, Schurr and Cardwell – Physicians for Women

New sign 2015

It was a great day – my husband and I had decided to expand our family.  I was overjoyed, but also a little scared. I wanted to find the best doctor to care for me and my baby during this most important time in my life.  Finding a doctor that was the right fit, was a decision I was not going to take lightly. Searching online I came across a small and fairly new private OBGYN clinic, Melius, Schurr & Cardwell. I decided to make an appointment to meet the doctors.  Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

In the Summer of 2005 I walked into Melius, Schurr and Cardwell for the first time and the rest is history!  I have been a part of the Physicians for Women family for 10 years now!!  They have helped me through four pregnancies, four births, and other health issues in that time period. And with each passing year I grow to love the doctors and the nurses even more.  It is hard for me to put into words how much this clinic means to me.  They respect me as an individual, a patient, and a mom.

I am never treated as a number in their system, they usually know me by name, and in fact many times, I will see the doctors out and around Madison and they will stop and say hi.  Their hours are really convenient, and more importantly when you need to get in and see someone right away, they are always accommodating.  The reception area is always serene and peaceful, and feels more like I am waiting for a spa treatment rather than an appointment. If a mom should need to brings her kids with her to the appointment, there is a wonderful play area full of books, toys, and my favorite, rocking chairs.  We don’t have one at home, so I always enjoyed rocking my little one while waiting to be called.

I am not one for surprises, and at Melius, Schurr & Cardwell, there were none.  They walked me through every check-up and every routine test.  The entire staff takes the time to answer any question I might have.  Throughout my pregnancies I felt safe.  I had complete trust in all of the doctors.  I had 9 months to get to meet and know each of the 3 and then with my last two children 4 doctors.  I loved knowing that when the time came for my baby to arrive, I would recognize the doctor bringing my baby into the world, and the doctor would also know me.

Now, I can’t write this article and not mention ultrasounds.  As part of the routine prenatal care, they perform an ultrasound early on in the pregnancy and then again about halfway through.  The ultrasound room is welcoming and in fact, it was so much fun to bring the younger siblings along to hear the babies heartbeat and see pictures of the baby.  They also take pictures of the baby to give you to keep.  It is almost as if they have asked every woman what they want in their prenatal experience and fulfilled everything!

Over the past 10 years the clinic has expanded and grown, but the level of care as stayed the same.  I have sent pretty much all of my friends to Melius, Schurr & Cardwell, and I am so happy to be able to write about my experiences with them, in hopes that many of you will see for yourselves the quality of care you deserve and will receive.  I know it’s easy to just go to the OB you might be referred to when you get pregnant, but I am so thankful that I did research leading me to this phenomenal clinic.

Recently I have been inspired to reflect on my experience over the last 10 years because the Fitchburg Physicians for Women clinic is celebrating their 15 year anniversary this month.  Their motto has always been “it’s not the number of women we treat, it’s how we treat women”.  I know that in today’s world of healthcare, time with a patient gets to be less and less and I know these physicians will never let the personalized care they provide be lost in the fast paced world we live in.  They truly celebrate women and the miracle of childbirth!
