Madison, WI: There is no doubt that we are living through unprecedented times. And there is no doubt that kids will look back at this someday with slightly different perspectives and memories of what this time was like (that what adults may have)! So as soon as Quarantine 2020 began, a local Madison area mom had an idea. She wanted to help her kids remember this unique, historical moment in their lives by writing about it in their own words.
Since many kids are missing out on so many of their scheduled activities and trips, they created a kid-centered newspaper for kids, by kids in the Madison area community!
You may have already seen them featured on CNN, or WPR or Madison.com, but at The Quarantine Times (a free digital newspaper) – kids are invited to submit their art + writing! They want to readers to read about this quarantine from the perspective of youth in the area. The Quarantine Times will feature creative writing, art, comics, backyard sports, and interviews in their “People Helping People” section. And each edition will have a different ‘theme’ or ‘topic’.
The first edition of the newspaper came out on April 1. Prompts have ranged from writing thank you notes and interviewing parents to inventing holidays and writing from pets’ perspectives.
The deadline to contribute to the 5th edition is Thursday, May 21st at noon. They’re doing nature writing prompts this week. Prompt #1: a poem about CHANGES in nature; Prompt #2: Pourquoi stories (based on Native American myths); Prompt #3: a photo of you learning outdoors. Please email [email protected] if you have any questions or if you a have a child who would love to submit a piece to be published!
