Human trafficking is often thought of as a reality that many of us will not encounter in our daily lives. However, this crime of exploitation is happening right here in every county across Wisconsin and beyond. Each day, women are being coerced, deceived, or forced into Commercial Sexual Exploitation (CSE), a crime defined by the use of force, fraud, or coercion to induce another individual into selling sex. This heinous industry thrives on vulnerabilities, making it incredibly difficult for victims to break free and heal from their trauma.
For many survivors, the path into exploitation often begins with what is known as “relational recruitment.” Traffickers aren’t always strangers lurking in the shadows; they can be family members, friends, intimate partners, or caregivers—people who gain their victims’ trust before exploiting them. This betrayal not only deepens the trauma but also makes it even harder for survivors to trust others, including those who genuinely want to help them escape.
Statistics show that survivors remain victimized for an average of seven years before they can break free, and even then, leaving is just the first step in a long and arduous journey of healing and restoration. The trauma endured leaves deep scars—physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Without comprehensive support, many risk falling back into exploitation simply because they lack the resources to rebuild their lives. In fact, 80% of survivors that leave their trafficker will re-enter exploitation within a year without comprehensive services and support.
Healing from trauma is not a solitary journey. Safe relationships and a community of care are crucial in helping survivors reclaim their lives. This is why Zeteo Community exists—to provide a haven where survivors can find the support, care, and opportunities they need to rebuild.
At Zeteo Community, the mission is to serve women who have been sexually exploited by providing residential programming and a supportive community in which they are free to dream and thrive. Through trauma-informed and strengths-based care, Zeteo Community provides not just a safe space but also the tools necessary for true recovery. This includes access to various therapies, life skills training, job and career readiness programs, on-site classes, and workshops—all aimed at empowering women to regain their independence and confidence.
Zeteo Community is committed to serving each survivor according to her unique needs and goals. Every woman who enters the program is seen as the expert of her own care. By fostering a strength-based approach, Zeteo Community ensures that survivors aren’t just receiving services; they are reclaiming their life and identity where she is no longer defined by what was done to her but by the strength she carries forward.
Ending human trafficking requires more than awareness; it demands action. Whether through volunteering, supporting survivor-led initiatives, or simply educating ourselves and our communities, we can all play a role in breaking the chains of exploitation. Every woman deserves to live free, to heal, and to thrive. Together, we can make that a reality.
