Because I Am a Woman

I wear shoes that hurt my feet,
and I worry about the food I eat.
Because I am a woman.

I clean and I dust
and am an object of lust.
Because I am a woman.

I shop and I cook
and am judged by my looks.
Because I am a woman.

I nurture and I mother,
and I sacrifice for others.
Because I am a woman.

But there is more to me
than what you see.
And more to me than you want to believe.
Because I am a woman.

I question and I dream
of that which is unseen.
Because I am a woman.

I have strength and inner peace
that never threatens to cease.
Because I am a woman.

I struggle and I fight
to keep my hard earned rights.
Because I am a woman.

I believe in who I am,
and I proudly take my stand.
Because I am a woman.

So don’t limit me to what you see
because what I can be is limit free.
Because I am a woman.
