NEW SSM HEALTH PROGRAM HELPS KEEP WISCONSIN MOMS SAFE AFTER BIRTH

More than 2,400 new mothers have received post-birth alert bracelets in the first nine months of a new initiative aimed at improving postpartum care.

Since January, SSM Health hospitals across Wisconsin have been offering bright orange alert bracelets to new moms as part of a groundbreaking post-birth safety program. The goal? To help emergency teams quickly recognize postpartum patients and respond to potential complications with speed and care.

Why These Bracelets Matter

The weeks following childbirth can be a vulnerable time for mothers. Conditions like high blood pressure, blood clots, infections, and even heart issues can arise—sometimes suddenly. The alert bracelet acts as a visual cue for medical staff, signaling that the wearer recently gave birth and may need specialized attention.

Nancy Patrick, Clinical Nurse Specialist at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, shared that the program is already making a difference. “We’ve had moms come back to the ER wearing their bracelets, and it’s helped our team recognize postpartum risks right away,” she said.

Real Stories from the ER

Here are just a few examples of how the bracelets have helped:

  • A 35-year-old woman came to the ER with swelling and high blood pressure. She didn’t mention her recent delivery, but her bracelet did.
  • A 28-year-old mom arrived dizzy and hypertensive. Her bracelet prompted a conversation about her recent birth.
  • A 31-year-old woman needed urgent treatment for postpartum hypertension. Her bracelet helped staff act quickly.

Expanding the Safety Net

SSM Health is also working with local EMS teams to make sure moms wearing the bracelets get the right care even before they reach the hospital. “It’s about combining education, visibility, and fast response,” Patrick explained. “This program could truly save lives.”

What Staff and Families Are Saying

The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive:

  • “As a postpartum stroke survivor, I absolutely love this idea!”
  • “I went through this after my second birth. I believe they should wear it longer.”
  • “I’ve known friends who had postpartum complications. This would have helped them. Great job, SSM!”

Looking Ahead

With over 2,400 bracelets already distributed, SSM Health’s post-birth alert program is off to a strong start. It’s a simple yet powerful way to support new moms—and a reminder that even after delivery, their health and safety remain a top priority!
