When you think of opera, what comes to mind? Maybe grand theaters, dramatic music, or a centuries-old art form that feels far removed from today’s tech-driven world. But at Opera for the Young, we’re proving that opera can inspire awe and delight in today’s kids—even those immersed in video games, TV shows, and tablets.

As a parent of three kids—ages 2, 4, and 6—I’ve seen this magic firsthand. My 4- and 6-year-olds have watched two different Opera for the Young performances several times, and they are drawn in every single time. Even my busy 4-year-old is captivated by the storytelling through song. There’s something about opera’s combination of music, theater, and drama that holds their attention in a way that few other experiences can.
Opera for the Young uses modern tools to meet kids where they are. We provide videos to help students learn music and movements in preparation for the big day. But the heart of what we do is timeless: creating an immersive, multi-faceted art experience that sparks curiosity and joy.
What’s more, children don’t just watch—they participate. As part of the student chorus, they get the unique opportunity to rehearse with their peers and perform alongside our professional teaching artists. For many, it’s their first time on stage, working as collaborators in a live performance.
Opera isn’t old or boring—it’s dynamic, engaging, and full of wonder. At Opera for the Young, we’re showing kids and families just how exciting opera can be.
