Why I Tried Microblading & What I Thought Of It | Buttercup Beauty

The other day I was listening to the radio on my way to the gym and they were talking about eyebrows (of all things to be talking about on morning radio, right?!) In this case they were talking about threading vs. waxing and polling the audience. The radio host said ‘A good brow wax gives you the same result as a face lift.’ A few years ago I might have laughed at that, but now – in my mid 30’s – I found myself nodding my head in agreement! I’ve never actually had a facelift to compare, BUT I will say that I feel the best about my overall appearance when my brows are freshly shaped. And ironically on this particular day I was getting ready to head up to Waunakee for my follow up microblading appointment at Buttercup Beauty.

Having moved all over the country before settling in Madison, I went through a lot of brow artists. Some good, some not so good and some wonderful. But none as wonderful as Kylene from Buttercup Beauty right here in Waunakee. She is a master esthetician with over 10 years of experience. Kylene is a brow expert and has a special way of designing the perfectly arched brow that accentuates your features.

I first met Kylene at a park in Madison four years ago. At this time I was new to the area and didn’t have any friends yet. She was one of the first people who I had a ‘real’ conversation with as our kids played together on the playground. She was friendly and it was refreshing to finally meet another mom in the area. I’m thankful for that chance encounter because not only did it lead me to a friendship with a wonderful person, but it also led me to my own personal brow expert!

Fast forward a few years and one of my eyebrows (yes. Only ONE…) started to turn white. How does this even happen?! Anyway, my husband didn’t think it was noticeable but to me you may as well have shaved off my right eyebrow – it would have been the same result. One of my friends then told me about microblading for brows – she had it done where she lives in Florida and thought it might solve my problems. It sounded scary to me, but it also led me to googling to learn more about it. I was still uneasy for a number of reasons and didn’t think much more about having it done. That is, until I saw that Buttercup Beauty had become licensed to do microblading. There is no one else I would have trusted to do this procedure! And now that I’ve had it done – I recommend it to anyone who wants a more permanent solution to unshapely brows or thinning of the brows… (Or whitening of the brows. That happens to other people, too, right?!)

Microblading is a new-ish procedure (although it’s been around in other countries for longer!) and it lasts anywhere from 18 months to 3 years depending on how you maintain them. It is a form of semi-permanent tattooing – done with a hand held tool and leaves brows looking natural by drawing on tiny lines that look like individual hairs. The first appointment lasts a couple hours because Kylene makes an effort to really learn exactly how you want your brows to look and spends a good amount of time on drawing the lines (so you can see it and approve or make any changes) before she begins the actual process. A month later, I went back in for a follow up and it only took about an hour. As a person who goes for a more natural appearance, I was very nervous about mixing the word ‘tattoo’ and my face in the same sentence – but this process is very natural and literally just looks like your own hairs. New guidelines: A $50 consultation is required prior to initial session (will apply to total cost of $595 which includes initial 2 hour session and 1.5 hour touch up 6-8 weeks after).  Annual color boost fee is $275. Avoid caffeine and alcohol at least 72 hours or 1 week if possible! During consult you will determine if Powder Ombre or Feather Strokes (or a combination of blading and shading) is best for you!

For me, microblading was absolutely worth it and I will doing it again in a couple years and would recommend for anyone who has been considering it or who may be in a similar situation with wanting fuller or more natural looking brows.

In addition to being a brow expert and my new go-to for microblading, Buttercup Beauty also does clinical facials, waxing and spa facials.
